This year's 30th Annual Saskatchewan Stakes and Futurity Reining Horse Show held October 20th , 21st, and 22nd, 2006 at the Golden Mile Arena in Moose Jaw, Sk. proved to be a testament to the commitment of the SRHA that the show has continued for three decades now. Rhonda Miller of Didsbury, Alta. and Greg Lauder of Cochrane, Alta. were our judges this year assisted by scribes Melanie Burns, Rose Cartier, Kelly Ribbling and Mark Anderson. Our announcer Neil Darroch of Saskatoon, Sk. kept things moving smoothly from Friday morning at 8:00 am to Sunday afternoon at around 4:00 pm. Acknowledgements are made to Bev Neuman, Corrine Sawatzky, Shannon Wilson and Jerri McPhee in the office upstairs. Without these hardworking individuals there couldn’t be a show so thank-you once again from everyone involved. Also on behalf of the SRHA we would like to thank our photographer Dallas Pole of Cowgirl Creations and our videographer PS Video for a job well done.

Always the highlight of the weekend is the Open 3 Year Old Reining with the first go Friday afternoon. Leading the way in a 3-way tie were Vicki Braun on Toffee Coffee Cowboy, Tyler Albrecht on Dry Eyerish Playgirl and  Wayne Latimer on Who Whiz This Kid all scoring an impressive 142.5 followed closely by Loc Duce on Jacs Okie Pine with a 141.5  and  Vicki Braun on Solanos Chicasan with a 140.0.

The second go round Sunday afternoon was just as exciting as Friday with Loc Duce on Jacs Okie Pine and Wayne Latimer on Who Whiz This Kid battling it out for first place with a tie score of 145.0 with Johnny Picray on Juan Smokin Sailor right on their heels with a 144.5 followed by Tyler Albrecht  on Dry Eyerish Playgirl with a 144.0. From these incredible runs and horse and rider combinations came our 2006 Stakes and Futurities champion of the 3 Year Old Open Reining, Wayne Latimer on Who Whiz This Kid. I don’t think there is anyone out there in our reining world who doesn’t know the name Wayne Latimer.

In a recent interview Wayne said he has been training and showing horses for 45 years and actually won this same class the very first year of the Saskatchewan Stakes and Futurity. What a truly fitting way to celebrate thirty years of the show and for Wayne to win on such a fine stallion as Who Whiz This Kid and we all surely knew who this kid was at the end of the day. This stallion was sired by Bartop Sailor and his dam is Peppy’s Chick Bar. He is a grandson of Topsail Whiz a four million dollar sire. The owner, Kelli Rucker of Kettle Falls, WA sent this colt to Wayne and it is the first horse she has ever had trained and shown by someone. As Wayne says “He is a big turner, a big stopper. He really can do it all. There is nothing bad about him and he acts more like a gelding than a stallion and he’s only been to one other show this year.”

With Wayne Latimer’s experience and expertise he says, “The key to success in reining is knowing when to do what.”  Spoken like the true gentleman he is with a hint of modesty. With one day of grace after the show (I might add that for the most part it was spent travelling home) he is right back at it, starting the new future prospects for next year. Congratulations to you both on your win and the use of a Kiefer Built trailer for a year, donated by Gerry and Corrine Ginter of Automan Trailers in Prince Albert, Sk.

Saturday nights opening ceremonies started off with the recognition of all the trainers and trailer winners who have supported the show in the past. Special recognition was made to Mr. Johnny Picray who will be retiring this year from showing. Our president of the SRHA, Vicki Braun presented him with a special gift to let him know we appreciate his past support and that we all will miss him.

Next came the freestyle reining that filled the Golden Mile Arena stands. The performances were great and the costumes even better. Shantel Berteig of Swift Current, Sk. riding Hankins Dry Steel won the event with a score of 143.5. By the way did anyone know there are apparently pirates on the River Saskatchewan? LOL

These are just some of the highlights of our 30th Annual Stakes and Futurities Show. We cannot forget that without our sponsors, advertisers, volunteers, executive, directors, members, youth members and  competitors it would not be such a success so thank-you to each and everyone of you. The 2007 reining season will be here before we know it so remember to relax a little and enjoy the upcoming festive season.
