1st Annual Saskatchewan Stakes and Futurities Reining Horse Show

Reining is defined as a western riding competition where the rider guides the horse through a precise pattern of circles, lightning fast spins, and the signature maneuver of reining, the sliding stop. All who attended were treated to exactly this at the Annual Stakes and Futurity, SRHA’s premiere reining horse show. The Golden Mile Arena in Moose Jaw was host to the 31st Annual Show on October 19, 20, and 21. A special thanks to everyone who helped to make this years show a great success and to Gerry and Corrine Ginter of Automan Trailers in Prince Albert for supplying the use of a brand new Kiefer Built horse trailer to the Open 3 Year Old Reining winner.

The highlight of the show was undoubtedly the “3 Year Old Open” class. From nearly forty entries, Jim Anderson riding SG Chic Magnet, finished on top with an impressive aggregate score of 292.0. He scored a 147.0 on the first go and a 145.0 on the second. The stallion, SG Chic Magnet, owned by B. Lynne Hoff of Sunglade Ranch is the end product of a long breeding plan. Also known as “Jets”, SG Chic Magnet was sired by Chics In The Male and out of Majorita Peppy (daughter of Peppy Badger Chex). His grandmother Hy Vista Star by Major Bonanza was the first horse bought by Sunglade Ranch and has turned out to be a great producer. Lynne says, “Jets is so talented and natural, he doesn’t even have to run to win”.

The rider and trainer, Jim Anderson, grew up in Pincher Creek, Alberta and has been around horses all of his life. He started with team roping as a boy and later began training horses. This has allowed Jim to travel and spend time working with horses in the United States, Italy and Germany. The 2007 season has proved to be very successful year with other wins including The Cardston Derby, The Red Deer Spring Classic, The Wheat City Derby and The West Coast Classic. Jim and his wife Andrea currently reside in Strathmore, Alberta.

The Stakes and Futurity Show concludes another great year of reining in Saskatchewan. Many thanks to the sponsors, advertisers, volunteers, executive and members. We look forward to the 2008 Jackpot Series.
